Understanding The EYFS Curriculum


The Three Prime Areas of Development
reflect the key skills and capacities that all children need to develop and learn effectively, and become ready for school. These Areas are:

Personal Social and Emotional Development

'Supports children’s development by helping them to interact effectively and develop positive attitudes to themselves and others."

Helping children to;

  • Develop self confidence and Self Esteem
  • Manage own feelings and behaviour
  • Make relationships

Communication, Language and Development

''involves giving children opportunities to speak and listen in a range of situations, and to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves"

Physical Development

'focuses on how babies and young children gain control of their bodies, but it also includes how children learn about keeping themselves active and healthy and how they learn to use equipment and materials successfully and safely.'

Specific Areas of Development
The EYFS requires Practitioners to support children in four specific areas, through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied. These areas are :
